I backed the Maximum Chrome Kickstarter edition, which means I own more optional modules than any sane person needs for a dice-chucking road race, and I regret none of it. This is Restoration Games doing what they do, taking a beloved 1986 chaos-fest and rebuilding it with modern production and just enough added structure to justify the reprint.

The core loop is still four dice, one per car plus one for a special ability like a helicopter strike, straight out of the original’s DNA. What’s changed is the turn structure, instead of resolving all your cars in one go like 1986 did, you now interlace turns car by car across the table, which sounds like unnecessary bookkeeping until you realize how much longer each individual action takes with the new damage-card system layered on. That interlacing is the right call for a game this much heavier than its ancestor, though it does mean Vendetta runs at least fifty percent longer than the original despite cars actually covering less ground.

And there is so much you can bolt onto this. Road hazards, motorcycles, a literal big rig, pre-race drafts of special abilities per car, dozens of expansion modules, and here’s the thing, none of it feels like padding for padding’s sake. Each new rule you learn brings a genuinely new flavor of mayhem rather than just more administrative overhead, which is the trap most legacy-restoration projects fall into and mostly avoid here.

If you disliked the original because a bad roll or a vindictive tablemate could take you out through no fault of your own strategy, Vendetta will not fix that for you, if anything the longer runtime makes bad luck sting more since you’ve invested more time in the run before it ends. One of my group got absolutely hammered three sessions running while the rest of us skated by relatively clean, and that unevenness is a real, known cost of this design, not a fluke.

Four stars. It’s chaotic, occasionally unbalanced, deeply silly, and an incredible way to end a game night when everyone’s brains are too fried for anything that requires real strategy.
